Licensed Electricians for Safe, Code-Compliant Panel Replacements

Older electrical panels can struggle to power today’s modern devices, leading to overloaded circuits, flickering lights, or even fire hazards. A panel replacement swaps out your existing panel for a new one at the same amperage — correcting faulty breakers, recalled equipment, worn contacts, and code deficiencies without increasing the service size. For a true capacity increase, see our electrical panel upgrades page.

Our licensed electricians handle panel replacements throughout Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley, Mission, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, and Hope. We handle permits, inspections, and BC Hydro coordination so your replacement is smooth from start to finish.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need to Replace Your Electrical Panel

Older electrical panels can wear down over time and may no longer meet today’s safety standards. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Your home was built before the 1980s and still has the original electrical equipment
  • Dimming or flickering lights, especially when major appliances turn on
  • Frequent breaker trips (overloaded or failing circuits)
  • Burning smell, warmth, or visible scorch marks near the panel
  • Outdated panel that can’t support EV chargers, heat pumps, or other upgrades
  • Your insurance provider has flagged your current panel as unsafe

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, your panel may no longer be safe for daily use.

Safety & Reliability

Why Replace Your Electrical Panel?

As electrical panels age, they can struggle to keep up with today’s power needs, leading to safety risks, frequent breaker trips, and limits on the technology you can use at home.

Prevent Overloaded Circuits & Electrical Failures

Modern homes demand more power than older panels were designed for. A replacement helps avoid overheating, power surges, and frequent breaker trips.

Power Modern Appliances, EV Chargers & HVAC Systems

Air conditioning, heat pumps, and electric vehicle chargers all require adequate panel capacity. A new panel ensures your home can support them safely.

Stay Up to Code & Meet Insurance Requirements

Older panels may no longer comply with current safety standards. We make sure your system meets BC code and insurance expectations.

Prepare for Future Upgrades & Smart Home Tech

A new panel allows you to add more circuits and adapt to future renovations, secondary suites, and energy-efficient technology.

Many older panels no longer meet insurance or BC Hydro requirements. Our team handles all permits and inspections to make sure your replacement is fully compliant.

FAQ

Electrical Panel Replacement FAQ – Chilliwack & Fraser Valley

How much does a panel replacement cost in Chilliwack?

A same-amperage panel replacement in Chilliwack typically runs $2,400–$2,800 for 100A panels and $2,800–$3,400 for 200A panels. These prices include the new panel, breakers, labour, permit, and Technical Safety BC inspection. We provide a detailed written quote before any work begins — no hidden fees.

What is the difference between a panel replacement and a panel upgrade?

A panel replacement swaps out your existing panel for a new one at the same amperage — this is done for recalled panels (Federal Pioneer, Zinsco, FPE), panels with worn breakers, or panels failing inspection. A panel upgrade increases your electrical capacity, typically from 100A to 200A, and involves new service wires, a new meter base, and BC Hydro co-ordination. See our panel upgrades page for upgrade pricing and details.

Do I need a permit for a panel replacement in BC?

Yes. All electrical panel replacements require a permit and inspection through Technical Safety BC. Huntley Electrical handles the permit application as part of every job and co-ordinates the BC Safety Authority inspection before closing out the work.

How long does a panel replacement take?

Most residential panel replacements take 4–8 hours in a single day. Your power will be off for most of that window. If BC Hydro needs to disconnect the service entrance, we co-ordinate that in advance to minimize the outage time.

Will a panel replacement affect my home insurance?

It can lower your premium. Many BC insurers charge higher rates — or won’t cover homes — with recalled panels or panels under 100A. A permitted and inspected replacement removes those flags. We provide a completion certificate you can forward directly to your insurer.

Can I add EV charging or a hot tub after a panel replacement?

It depends on your panel capacity and existing load. If you’re replacing a 100A panel with a new 100A panel, you may still be limited on spare circuits. If adding high-demand equipment is the goal, we can assess whether a capacity upgrade makes more sense than a same-amperage replacement.
