Safety & Capacity

Why Upgrade Your Electrical Panel?

An outdated panel can pose serious safety risks, limit your home’s electrical capacity, and make it difficult to power modern appliances and electronic devices. Many of our panel upgrades happen alongside kitchen and bath renovations — adding circuits for ranges, ovens, hot tubs, and pot lights often requires more capacity than legacy panels can provide. Here’s why an electrical panel upgrade is a critical step for homeowners:

Avoid Overloaded Circuits & Electrical Failures

A panel upgrade prevents power surges and circuit breaker trips.

Reduce Fire Risk from Unsafe Panels

Older panels can have weakened connections or breakers that fail to trip properly, increasing the risk of electrical fires.

Increase Electrical Capacity for Modern Homes

Powering high-demand appliances, air conditioning units, and EV chargers requires a larger panel.

Ensure Compliance with Electrical Codes & Safety Standards

Our professional electricians ensure your panel meets modern building codes.

Future-Proof Your Home

An upgraded panel allows for future expansions, additional circuits, and smart home technology integration.

If your lights flicker or your breakers trip frequently, it may be a sign your panel no longer meets modern insurance or BC Hydro requirements — in many cases, a full electrical panel replacement is the safest solution. Our team handles all permits and inspections directly to make the process easy.

Local Knowledge

Panel Upgrades Across Chilliwack’s Neighbourhoods

Huntley Electrical is based in Chilliwack — not driving in from the Lower Mainland. We already know the housing stock in every neighbourhood, which means faster assessments and fewer surprises on the job.

Sardis & Promontory

High-demand area with rapid new construction. Promontory homes often need sub-panels for garages and EV charging. Sardis older stock frequently on 100A — ideal candidates for 200A upgrades.

Vedder & Cultus Lake

Rural and semi-rural properties with longer runs to detached shops and garages. Many Vedder Road properties need a full service upgrade, not just a panel swap — we assess before quoting.

Downtown Chilliwack & Fairfield Island

Older character homes and post-war bungalows on 60A fuse panels are common here. Fairfield Island properties often have competing loads from sump pumps and outbuildings. We handle the full scope.

FAQ

Electrical Panel Upgrade FAQ – Chilliwack & Fraser Valley

How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in Chilliwack?

Panel upgrade costs in Chilliwack depend on the scope of work. A same-amperage panel replacement runs $2,400–$3,400. Upgrading from 100A to 200A service — including new service wires, meter base, BC Hydro coordination, permit, and inspection — typically runs $4,600–$6,600. Upgrading to 320A service runs $10,500–$14,500. We provide a detailed written quote before any work begins.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Chilliwack?

Yes. All electrical panel upgrades require a permit and inspection through Technical Safety BC. Huntley Electrical handles the permit application as part of every job and co-ordinates the BC Safety Authority inspection before closing out the work.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential panel upgrades take 4–8 hours in a single day. Your power will be off for most of that time. If BC Hydro needs to disconnect and reconnect the service entrance, we co-ordinate that in advance so the outage window is as short as possible.

What’s the difference between a panel upgrade and a panel replacement?

A panel replacement swaps out an old or faulty panel for a new one of the same capacity — common with recalled panels like Federal Pioneer or Zinsco. A panel upgrade increases your service capacity, typically from 100A to 200A. Many Chilliwack jobs involve both at the same time.

Will my insurance change after an electrical panel upgrade?

Many BC insurers charge higher premiums — or won’t cover homes — with recalled panels or panels under 100A. Upgrading to a 200A panel with a permit and inspection often reduces your premium. We provide a completion certificate you can forward directly to your insurer.

Can I add EV charging or a hot tub without a panel upgrade?

It depends on your current panel capacity. Many Chilliwack homes on 100A service don’t have enough spare capacity for a Level 2 EV charger and a hot tub simultaneously. We assess your existing load before recommending whether an upgrade is needed.

Are there rebates available for panel upgrades in BC?

A panel upgrade on its own doesn’t qualify for a standalone rebate, but if you’re upgrading as part of a heat pump or EV charger install, CleanBC and BC Hydro both offer rebates that cover the associated electrical work. We can walk you through what applies to your project.

Does Huntley Electrical serve areas outside Chilliwack?
